Wake up above
the whale coast
One private suite, its own entrance, and a deck where the ocean fills the whole horizon. Five minutes on foot to the sand — and nothing louder than the surf.
A small place, properly looked after
You are the only guests
Whalehaven isn't a hotel, and it isn't a row of units. It is one carefully kept suite in a family home at the top of a quiet cul-de-sac — which means the pool, the lapa and that view belong to you for the length of your stay.
Sue has hosted here for years, and the thing guests write about afterwards is rarely the linen. It's being met at the gate, being told which beach is best on a north-easterly, and being handed a key to somewhere that feels immediately, unreasonably calm.
— Sue, your host

Where you'll be
Southbroom, and everything within reach of it
Bel Mar Crescent sits in the green, hilly part of Southbroom — banana palms, tree ferns, vervet monkeys on the fence, and the sea a short downhill walk away.
- 5 min walk Granny's Pool & the main beach Sheltered tidal pool, lifeguards in season
- 3 min drive Southbroom Golf Club Monkeys on the fairway, ocean on the back nine
- 5 min drive Restaurants & the village shops Groceries, coffee and dinner without going far
- 15 min drive Margate & Ramsgate Blue-flag beaches, the airport, bigger shops
- 45 min drive Oribi Gorge Gorge swing, hiking and the Lehr's Falls lookout
Whale season runs June to November. Humpbacks and southern rights pass close inshore on their way up the coast and back — and the lapa deck is a very good place to be holding a pair of binoculars when they do.

What people say afterwards
We felt like we were home with our family members. We had a great time with Sue, she is so friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to going to the place again. It is very peaceful and neat and you can walk to the beach.

We had a very comfortable stay. The views from the deck were great and it was super having a pool to cool off on the hottest day of our stay. The location is fantastic, close to the beach. We will definitely consider you for any future stays when passing through the area.
ReneeRoodepoort, South Africa
What an amazing visit we had. The room is neat, tidy and modern. The deck at the lapa has a stunning view and at the right time of year we got to view the whales in the distance. Host was very friendly and welcoming. We can highly recommend this accommodation.

Before you book
Good to know
How many people does the suite sleep?
The suite is a double room and is set up for two guests. If you're travelling as a larger group, get in touch — we'll happily point you to somewhere nearby that fits everyone.
How far is the beach, really?
About a five-minute walk downhill to Granny's Pool and the main Southbroom beach. It is a hill, so allow a little longer coming back up with the cooler box.
Is there parking?
Yes — off-street parking inside the gate, on the property, with 24-hour armed response monitoring.
When can I check in?
Standard check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 10:00. If you're driving up from Durban or in from the airport at an odd hour, tell us in the booking request and we'll make a plan.
Can I actually see whales from the deck?
Between June and November, often — humpbacks and southern rights migrate along this stretch of coast and frequently pass within sight of the lapa. It's wildlife, so nobody can promise it. Bring binoculars and be patient.
What does it cost?
Rates vary by season and length of stay. Send your dates through the form above and we'll reply with a firm price the same day.
